A private lesson is the BEST way to build your skills and to make the most of your time. To that end, after our first consult, there will be steps in the process you will do before every in-person appointment. A lesson PACKAGE is even better, enabling me to support you throughout most or all of a garment making adventure. If you have a single lesson and decide you want more instruction to complete your garment, you can convert your single lesson into the first of a package, giving you a lower hourly rate for your next 1-2 sessions. While the activities and lesson content will be tailored to your experience and goals, a typical garment lesson package for a beginner garment sewist goes like this:
* 15-20 minutes of consultation either in person at Creative Threads or via Zoom or Facetime. During this session, we will discuss your past experience and goals, review your intended project, take one or two basic measurements if virtual (or a full measurement set if in person) and determine the size you need to cut. If you have worked with patterns before, and are comfortable, I may have you come to our first lesson with your paper pattern pieces cut out. This allows us more time for fine tuning the pattern fit at our first full lesson. (If you have never worked with patterns before, we will review and cut out your pattern together at our first full lesson). We will discuss and plan possible garment details that will reflect your unique taste and style, taking into account your fabric and pattern choice.
* First full lesson (2-3 hours) (assuming a fitted garment, i.e. not oversized or unstructured; think trousers, jeans or a fitted dress) we will take more comprehensive body measurements and make our pattern adjustments accordingly (unless you share the exact same measurements as the pattern company's fit model, you will need to make pattern adjustments). We may tissue fit your pattern or make up a muslin (test garment) before cutting into your fashion fabric. We will get the pattern laid out and pinned to your fabric and then you might cut your fabric and make markings at home or on your own in the Creative Threads classroom space following our lesson.
* Second and or 3rd lesson (2- 2 1/2 hours total) - we will begin constructing your garment. The goal is to get the main pieces together to assess the fit and make adjustments if needed. We will focus on sewing techniques that will help you create the best version of this garment, and that you can apply to your future makes as well!
