Beginning Sewing for Youth (ages 8-11)
Young students learn how to thread and use a sewing machine. Students are welcome to bring their own machine or borrow one of our machines that are perfect for beginning sewers.
Class 1: Become familiar with a sewing machine, practice sewing straight lines and threading the machine. Students will learn to cut, sew, stuff a pillow and slipstitch. (Material is provided. However, if your child would like to chose his/her own fabric, he/she will need 1/2 yard of cotton material.)
Class 2: Make a tote to carry something special. Students will learn to pivot while sewing, make a pocket, box corners and sew through multiple layers of fabric. Supplies needed: 1/2 yard of cotton material* for the outer bag and handles, 1/2 yard of coordinating cotton material for the lining and pocket*, 1/2 yard of fusible fleece* (used for other projects), one spool of thread to match*. (This can be used for other projects as well.)
Class 3: Create a zipper pouch for school supplies. Students will learn to use the iron, insert a zipper, quilt material and box corners. Materials needed: 1/4 yard of cotton fabric for the outer pouch* and 1/4 yard of cotton fabric for the lining*, 10" nylon zipper*. (We can use the fusible fleece from the previous project.) Optional: Coordinating thread.
Class 4: Make a pair of pajama pants (or shorts) out of your favorite material. Students will learn to read a pattern, make a casing for elastic and hem pants. Materials needed: one yard of cotton material (not knit)*, 3/4" elastic*, thread to match.*
